No one sneezes so elegantly into the middle of an arrangement like Helenka. Glitter, glamour, and low fidelity—the certified jazz musician sings virtuosically in unusual registers. Helenka, the child of Slovakian immigrants, combines offbeat comedy, singing, and performance into a mix that is simultaneously unsettling, touching, and inspiring. Between notes, punchlines, and strangely familiar stage characters, she pays homage to the tragedy of everyday life and creates moments in which the absurd seems completely normal. With “a little jazz,” she presents a show with vocals, keys, beats, and fluffy songs. Along the way, she solves the big questions of the universe: Will 2 minus 3 ever equal 1 again? Helenka plays solo or in a trio with drummer Pascal Sontag and pianist Simon Althaus – always with charm and a pinch of chaos.
