In a world where animals and people live together, we encounter hippopotamuses that choose a middle path. Are they humans disguised as the animal they wear? Or are they hippos that are searching for themselves inside the individual that inhabits their body? Join these hippos on a physical journey that could be a fable, a metaphor, the preliminary reflection for a doctoral thesis on humanity and animality or, simply, a chance for all audiences to find themselves, and be a little lonelier, but in better company. Zum-Zum is an artistic project dedicated to the creation, production and diffusion of works of theatre for all audiences. They aim to create unique shows that expand the limits of imagination and challenge the way in which young and old alike view the world through the lens of theatre.

Between 250 kg of straw and 125 kg of human mass, two people play around through movement, hand to hand technique, balance, and humour, exploring the peculiarities of human relationships. Envà (in Catalan) is a thin wall that is constructed to separate spaces. We often build mental walls that protect us from serious emotional danger. And we spend our lives looking for a way to knock that wall down. Amer and Àfrica are two circus artists specialised in hand to hand. Since they met in 2011, they have been intensely working to discover their own language. Through the use of objects they find the way to explore new possibilities of expressing the fragility of movement and shape. The project won the Best Show Award at the Umore Azoka festival in Leioa (2018) and was selected to receive support from the De Mar a Mar creative arts fund as part of the POCTEFA programme.

An asteroid has crashed into the city! The Spaceguard Survey team have to make the first approach to it and get some samples to have them analysed. But while they are trying to do so, something unexpected happens. They will find out that there’s life beyond the expected and they will need to learn how to connect with these new subjects. It won’t be easy because of the cultural and linguistic barriers. They won’t know how to behave themselves or what to expect and, through humour, we will all reflect on how we connect with strangers. In the first part of the show, humans won’t see or know about the aliens. They will try to do their job but again and again it will be ruined by these newcomers. A production managed by Toti Toronell that combines puppets and actors with the aim of achieving a surprising and transformative impact in a public space.

OZMA follows the burlesque hero in this emotional and insane journey using a new mischievous and surprising soundtrack. Buster pursues the young girl he loves in an epic fresco that takes in three epochs: the Stone Age, Ancient Rome and modern times. In the same way that pianists of the day accompanied the silent film, juxtaposing it with a catalogue of emotion and atmosphere, OZMA narrates the image with an inventive score mixing colourful composition and simultaneously playful and responsive improvisation. Under the leadership of Stéphane Scharlé and Édouard Séro-Guillaume, OZMA has six albums to its credit and 15 years of exciting projects: a real penchant for music and image with creations of photo-concerts, as well as numerous film concerts and 15 years of voyages and musical meetings with more than 400 concerts on four continents.

Year after year, theatre in public spaces is being embraced by millions of spectators. Countless festivals and events reflect the flourishing artistic dialogue with public spaces. The Federal Association for Theatre in Public Spaces is inviting people to become acquainted with current theatre projects and new productions for public spaces in Germany. The projects reflect the work being done on this scene and reveal the diversity of these genres. In Shortcuts, eight groups present themselves in short productions in five-minute tact. Whether they are large-scale productions, site-specific theatre, walk acts, performance or contemporary circus, the performances give an insight into the various artistic fields of the theatre makers and are intended to arouse interest in theatre in public spaces as well as helping artists to network with promoters, producers and other professionals.

In his childhood, Adriano Cangemi was always intrigued by a verb, an action: fly. Through circus he discovered that this dream could be possible, and the feelings that his body was experiencing could be transmitted directly to the public. Endurance and training enable him to play in the air without limits, but he also wants to incorporate a complex message in his act, where he talks about the ideas he defends and the emotions that move him. “Nagual” is a performance without words, one that can be understood by all audiences, where everything is concentrated in the body of the performer, and his encounter with the public, the space and a trapeze. An expressive and symbolic piece of body transformation, which starts with a sorcerer and his path to rebirth as the energy of the flying wind. It shows that the most efficient survival mechanism is to follow the path of our dreams.

Living Space and Monsters Act Maraña is an aesthetic experience. It’s an installation completely knitted with wool. It takes the place where it is installed and transforms it into a living space where the colours, materials, sensations and sounds take the visitors into a world without references. A place where, through abstraction, we connect with the very basic shapes of the human subconscious where living creatures, also made of wool, come onto the scene and take this universe even further. A universe that transforms in front of your eyes and is in constant motion. Maraña is an original idea by the director Paula Riquelme, a former circus artist and aerial choreographer from Chile. Today the company is based in Berlin, Germany, and is a mix of Chilean and German artists.

Poetry Slam is on everybody’s lips and in everybody’s ears. No wonder, because texts that usually vegetate between two book covers are suddenly brought back to life. At a Poetry Slam, the authors step up to the mike with their texts, without the protection of a lectern with a glass of water and reading lamp. It works perfectly – be it in a cellar bar or a theatre, in the metropolis or a small town, the shows are sold out and the mikes rock. It just so happens that the poetry slam scene is also an unrivalled talent pool. Well-known cabaret artists such as Marc-Uwe Kling, Bodo Wartke or Sebastian Krämer and also noted literary figures such as Nora Gomringer or the actor Michael Lenz earned their stripes as slammers. For these reasons a poetry slam show is an absolute must at the IKF. We have invited some of the best slammers on the scene and they will be demonstrating what is possible with the spoken word. Slam poet Felix Römer will be hosting the show.
